Trouble at mill
Feb. 8th, 2009 10:45 pmThe news from Australia does get more and more dire. Entire towns razed and over a hundred people dead (that we know of so far).
There are many links about if people want to donate to the thousands made homeless. I understand that blood (for burns victims) and cash are the currencies most needed right now.

A close friend has just been given a life changing diagnosis. This is perhaps on a different scale to the death and destruction of the above, but watching her try and reconcile with that, which she is doing in an amazing and gracious way, also amplifies the distance.
I hope it doesn't make me a person with no sense of proportion, but watching the news today I had one small twinge of happiness. For the first time I can recall, I was listening to the country's leader talk about something horrible that had happened, and my sympathy was not battling it out with my raging desire to throw things at the snivelling crocodile tears of Johnny, the Rat-Faced Bastard. Thanks Kev.

Date: 2009-02-09 05:09 pm (UTC)Also dread to think what this has done to the wildlife around there, especially after such a long drought.

Date: 2009-02-09 07:06 pm (UTC)The wildlife have almost certainly suffered. Although, when 98% of the plateau at Mt Buffalo burned to a crisp a few years ago, the only dead animal found was a feral cat. Maybe they get the feeling when it's time to go...
