[profile] exactlyhalf and I are now in possession of tickets to Australia in Easter. This makes me very happy. It's 1 year (minus 6 days) since I left, and I'm starting to feel a little twitchy. (Or maybe that's the sleep deprivation making my eyelid do that. Anyway, it's irritating). Hopefully the Easter school holidays will allow us to catch up with many teaching/student friends and family.

Now, back to work (while I eagerly await [profile] emily_shore's insights into the NH primary - go Hilary!)

I hope you have a good time there!

Completely OT, but have you seen this?

Interesting article. When Howard got a majority in the upper house in 2004 there was a great cartoon of him as Gollum, perched on a precipice saying 'I will not let the precious go to my head, I promisssess'.

And he's not the only one:

Aside from the fact that many of your friends and family are in Oz, how do you compare living here with living there?

I've never been to Oz, though we hope to go to World SF Convention which will probably be in Melbourne in 2011.

Depends on the day you ask me!

I find (Oxford at least) very beautiful, and feel more in tune with seasons and the land and stuff here. The natural world seems much closer. Oxford itself is of course, wonderful, and it's great to be so close to many wonderful places, although we haven't really taken full advantage of the fact yet. One thing I find is tha I don't yet have a good grip on 'the people' the way I do in my native country but as a sweeping generalisation I'd say that a random person is a bit more likely to be surly or grumpy than in Melbourne.

The lack of sunshine does get to me at this time of year, as does the fact it always seems to be raining. In Melbourne I wouldn't think twice about popping down to the shops for dinner materials after work. Tonight it was unthinkable. Oh, and any kind of service takes *forever*. It's seriously not meant to take 30 minutes to get a pint at the bar in a pub! Also, I find it strange not knowing who any public figures are.

On balance, it looks like today wasn't a good day to ask! Try in 4 months time when the sun is shining ;)
