I Missed the iTunes meme last time around, and so here is how I procrastinated going to the gym this evening

Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song. (Skip the instrumentals, the remixes and the mashups)
Step 3: Let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.

I also skipped spoken and instrumentals. Some of these (***)are covers, with non-obvious artists. Guessing the original is probably fair enough - but bonus if you can guess who covered it.

1. “Well this is our last good-bye.”

2. “You won’t admit you love me and so, how am I ever to know?” *** (Song title guessed by [profile] foreverdirt, artist by [personal profile] sally_maria)

3. “No use crying, talking to a stranger, naming the sorrow you’ve seen”

4. “Cold, cold water surrounds me now”

5. “I once was opened, and one with a travelling heart”

6. “Butterflies are very strong, they only cry when they’re called upon”

7. “I can see him comin’, he’s a walkin’ down the highway, with his big boots on, and his big thumb out: he wants to get me, he wants to hurt me, he wants to bring me down.”

8. “Now that our mountain is growing with people hungry for wealth, how come it’s you that’s a goin’, and I’m left alone by myself?”

9. “It’s coming’ through a hole in the air, from those nights in Tiananmen Square.” ***

10. “She’s got everything she needs, she’s an artist, she don’t look back”

11. “If I could make it rain today, and wash away this sunny day down to the gutter, I would”

12. “Walkin’ down to Birmingham, way down south in Dixie-land, I thought that I would stop a while, take a vacation southern style”

13. “Comme l’oiseau sur la branche, comme l’ivrogne dans le choeur de la nuit, j’ai cherche ma liberte”  guessed by deepbluemermaid

14 “I was just a boy when I sat down to watch the news on TV.”

15. “Jenny came over and told me bout Brad – he’s such a hairy behemoth she said”  Got by [profile] foreverdirt

16 “My love she speaks like silence, without ideals or violence.”

17. “Can’t afford to breathe in this town, nowhere to sit without a gun in my hand.”

18. “If it be your will that I speak no more, and my voice be still, as it was before, I will speak no more.”

19. “The distant future, the year 2000, the distant future, the year 2000, the distant future, the distant future” artist got by deepbluemermaid

20. “Outside another yellow moon has punched a hole in the night-time mist: I climb out your window and down to the street, I’m shining like a new dime.”

13 is probably the most famous, although in disguise here!

No, still not getting it! I'm either getting old or I'm getting slow. Or, most likely, both!

If it's any consolation I'm drawing a complete blank here....

Ee! I love 15 with all my dark little heart! I now have it stuck in my head -- of course. "Dumb as a box of hammers -- but such a handsome guy." (Jill Sobule, I Kissed A Girl)

2 I know largely as the theme from Coupling -- is it called Perhaps?

Otherwise, I'm drawing total blank. You are clearly Far Too Cool for me. :)

15. yays! (Have you heard the recent song by Katy Perry by the same title? Sucks nuts in comparison. Very much the 'hee hee look what I did to titillate the boys'.)

2. Title correct! It was made popular by someone quite famous, but I have a cover version by an Oz band.

(PS How is you? Have you got a thwecky yet?)

I was all excited when I saw a link to the Katy Perry version, because I thought it might be a cover. Shows what I know. :(-face.

In two hours I begin my slow amble towards the airport to collect a Thwecky! I can't wait! Only disappointment is that if you're posting on the intermawebs, you can't be lurking in their suitcases...

Ooh ooh! By now you should have a thwecky *waves*. This particular day might have been more productive if I had gone to americaland, but tomorrow might be better.
*hugs to all*

The version of number 15 I have is by Cake - but I must admit I found it from a vid and I know nothing about the band. It came up in my first 20 songs as well, but I think I'll leave it out, along with the songs where the title is the first line - Mr Sandman, anyone? :-)

ummm, 15 or 2? Because if Cake covered 'I kissed a girl' then I MUST have it, whereas their cover of Perhaps is merely awesome. And that *is* the track I had in mind. Obscurity bonus!

Sorry, I got mixed up - it's Perhaps I have the Cake version of.

I think it may be a Kirk/Spock vid but I'm not sure - unfortunately I'm on the wrong computer to check at the moment.

#13 is a French cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Bird on a wire'. Personally I like the Neville Brothers' cover best...it's almost gospel, and it's awesome!

Did Doris Day sing 'Perhaps', perhaps?

And I'm gonna guess Flight of the Conchords for 19, simply because they released an album called 'The Distant Future'.

#13 *is* Bird on a wire in French, but it's not a cover! It's the man himself in a live version! (4 weeks till we see the man in concert!!!)

Doris Dad did!

And you are correct about the band for 19 - it featured in the first episode of their show, a song for the post-apocalyptic world.

I love the fact that Leonard Cohen can sing in French. One of my favourite songs is 'The Partisan', which theoretically repeats the English lyrics in French but actually contains some interesting changes.

I looked up the FotC song afterwards, because it was bugging me. I love the binary solo! They are such giant geeks, those guys...

Leonard is my man!

Aren't FotC the best ever? have you heard their David Bowie song? (Bowie's in space - set your phasers on boogie!)
