Apr. 22nd, 2009 10:18 pm I continue on my mission to introduce my friends to the wonder and joy that is Tim Minchin. It continues below.
I'm a bit embarrassed not to have discovered this guy before I left Australia. Seems he was just getting big here when I left there. I actually first saw him on Buzzcocks, where he was a guest in the first episode where another long haired, singing comic was missing. But, since many of my Australian friends have in the last 6 months said something along the lines of "You must listen to this guy". So as least I wasn't much further behind than other Aussies.
So there is his stuff which is funny guy sings amusing songs with his own accompaniment.
Taboo - "a song about the language of prejudice"
If I didn't have you - "I'm just saying, you're not special. Well, I mean you're special, but you fall within a bell-curve" Oh, his little dances! His cheeky facial expressions! The maths!
Peace Anthem for Palestine - "You don't eat pigs, and we don't eat pigs..."
Dark Side.
cealdis is going to turn this into the best vid ever. I don't want to spoil the surprise...
The Guilt Song (Fuck the poor). No seriously guys, stay with me here. Australians can do irony. This was performed at the Australian version of Comic Relief.
And there is Tim does spoken word poetry. Because beat poetry is an under-appreciated art form.
Angry (feet) - poem. Yeah man.
And some quite genuine (and starkly beautiful) things too
Not Perfect If you need to understand the eyebrow reference, try here
Drowned. I'm looking forward to more like this. In moments where weeping in front of Youtube feels OK.
Fair warning though. Tim is wonderfully, and humorously, but quite earnestly, humanist. So if you're unlikely to be amused by/ enjoy/ want to hear something that begins:
"I get freaked out by churches.
Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords
But the lyrics are dodgy"
then you may not enjoy the following. That's cool. If you don't have qualms with that sentiment, then please enjoy
Tony the Fish/If you open your mind too much, your brain will fall out This is how evolution works
Storm - a 9 minute beat poem about homeopathy. No, seriously. (*hopes Prince Charles doesn't read my lj*)
And, my current obsession
White Wine in the Sun. It's about home. It's about where I come from. It's about what Christmas means if you don't believe in the religious bits. And despite the inadequate way I've tried to explain it, not sentimental. This song often finds me when I have something in my eye. And my throat.
BUT if you have stuck with it through those, then you my friends, deserve this. A love song to Adam Hills (he's sort of the Australian Simon Anstell, and he has only one foot, which I only mention so the reference doesn't seem odd). But you don't need to know anything about either of them to see the true love and passion that exists between them here.
The Adam Hillsong
ETA: he is, fortuitously, touring the UK later this year. yay!

Adam Hill/Tim Minchin: Their love is so pure!
Date: 2009-04-22 10:50 pm (UTC)I may even have clapped my hands once or twice. Maybe.
(also! I bought a blue and white sundress because it matched the necklace you gave me! and it is lovely, and so are you)
